This proposal for a community center combined with service flats for elderly organizes the whole program – quite literally – under one common roof. The emphasis on the shed-like roof is a contextual gesture, which correlates and refers to the scale and history of the surrounding agricultural landscape. The public program on the ground level is organized in a non-hierarchical way – as an “open house” with its functions immediately visible and easily accessible for everyone.The appartments are situated above, under the gable roof. Spacious terraces with solar-shading canopies introduce rythm to the continuous roof and a sense of airiness and freedom from within: staycation in Stabroek.
